Question:

You typically will need a third party tracking site such as commission junction, linkshare, zanox.com, etc... they are called affiliate networks.
The very basic part of affiliate networks... you put some code on your front page and on the confirmation page (after a sale is made). A trackable link is then created. First it connects to the first page code... thus tracking a click-through, etc... if a consumer makes a sale... the link will connect to the final page of code (the one on the confirmation page of your site)... thus telling the tracking solution a sale has been made and a commission is paid to the referring affiliate.
If you use a third party shopping cart for your site, they may have an affiliate program add-on. This might be the most afforadable as third party netoworks such as cj, linkshare, and zanox can be very expensive to launch.
Oh I forgot... there are some smaller affilate networks that let you start for free... you just maintain a small deposit with them... such as $100 to pay affiliates.
Try floppybank.com No set-up fee. You just deposit $100 to pay affiliates. You only pay a percentage to floppybank when a comission is paid... see the site for details. With them you just add some simple code to your site and voila! You have an affiliate program in place.
Best of luck
