Why do television affiliates names start with...?
Question:
Why can't they start with the Channel's name? exp- NBC 25 in Peoria?
Answers:
It goes back to the days of maritime radio in the early 20th century. The iniital letters K and W, for non-military radio and TV stations in the United States, come from the addition of a dash to the Morse letters A (for Army) and N (for Navy).
Generally, stations east of the Mississippi River start with W, and those west of the Mississippi River start with K. There are exceptions, such as KDKA in Pittsburgh and WOWT in Omaha.
Stations west of the Mississippi start with a K. East of the Mississippi with a W. Don't remember why though.
