If you ask someone if they're a Cop or affiliated with law enforcement do they really have to tell you?
Question:
Answers:
If they are undercover, no. If they are arresting you, or giving you an order, yes.
NO.
I don't think they have to .
Undercover officers might be able to get away with lying to keep from blowing their cover.
And of course they can always lie to their superiors and say that they did tell you, or that you never asked.
Who are they going to believe? An officer, or you?
You must be looking for a hooker huh.
No of course not....right to privacy ...you know.
I know in Canada they have too.
No, they don't. However, if they then bust you for whatever after the fact you may have a slim chance of making a case for entrapment.
No.
the Supreme Court has ruled that police can lie in any way they want in the line of duty.
That is the dumbest urban legend ever invented. Of course they don't have to tell you. I have heard that line so many times, I love dumb pot heads would always ask "Are you a cop, you know you have to tell me." No they don't
You should if you aren't a criminal, aren't involved in any criminal activity, and ask to see a shield or some identification, I don't care what anybody says.
And LOOK at it.
It's relatively easy for criminals to get one or have a fake made up. Many of them actually are given authority to carry a badge.
They're cops and etc. Not some effolgence of glory and have to abide by the law. Like anybody else.
cops are among the biggest liars i know and are sanctioned to be. in short, no they don't have to tell and if it's to their favor, they won't tell.
ever hear of an undercover who walks into a ring of dealers and says, hi, i'm a cop and am here to infiltrate your gang, get all the info i can and then, bust you all!
Sharon's answer up there above mine is wrong.
In Canada we do NOT have to identify ourselves as police officers if we don't want to and neither do undercover officers.
No, only if they are serving a warrant or making an arrest. If they are working undercover, buy/bust, prostitution, or other sting operation, no they do not have to tell you.
yes they have to, if you r in such a situation, and u can even ask them for an id, whether they r in uniform or not.
NO they can lie and if they get you it still counts.
sorry I cant answer I'm undercover Shush!
In a sting like you see on TV where they pick up guys for picking up hookers I think they have too? something about entrapment if they don't...
But a real undercover investigation no they don't and wouldn't...
i dont believe that they have to.
No law enforcement agent needs to tell anyone anything until they exercise their authority. Then they absolutely need to identify themselves.
No. SCOTUS has ruled that the police can use deception in the performance of their duties.
Hi, I'm here to buy drugs, heard you might be able to help me out.
First I have to ask, are you a cop?
Well, yes, but still sell to me because I want to arrest you, okay?
Even if they have to tell you they won't. They use entrapment all the time and get away with it. They are professional liars specially trained in the art of deception. Which is why nobody should shed a tear when they get killed in the line of duty.
yes.they absolutely have to tell you. So make sure you ask them before you sell him that bag of weed.
No, it's not required.
No.Watch "Cops". They pick up hookers and johns all the time who ask the cops if they are police. They always say "no" and then arrest them.
The cops used to have to tell you, but not any more. A male officer can even "feel-up" a suspected hooker, to prove that he's not a cop, without getting into trouble.
NO
Not unless you're being placed under arrest.
IN THE USA..
Law Enforcement officers do not have to identify themselves when working undercover. Plain and simple, the end. Anything else would be plain dumb.
If I'm at a club/bar/grocery store/theater/etc and someone walks up and says "Hey, aren't you a cop?" I do not have to say yes. I never do.
PLEASE READ.
I truly can't believe the ignorance I see in these answers.
If you're going to answer someones question, please have a clue. At the very least, preface you answer with something like " I'm not certain but... "
In the course of duties investigating crimes officers are not required to be 100% honest. That doesn't mean that we can tell you if you give us information on your dealer that we'll get your charges reduced but it allows us the ability to reasonably gain the trust of criminals to be able to arrest them for their crimes.
ON A SIDE NOTE
Entrapment- for the love of god read this and understand it, nothing is worse than not understanding what it means.
Entrapment as an example: You're 19yrs old, as a police officer I come up to you and hand you a case of beer and say go ahead and drink up. You crack a beer and drink it, then I arrest you for underage consumption/possession of alcohol. THAT is entrapment. Entrapment is NOT when someone makes the choice to commit a crime, ie picking up a hooker, buying drugs, etc.
