Whats careers are affiliated with a french degree?
Question: My girlfriend is majoring in French, though she's concerned that she might not be able to get a good teaching job so she's wondering what other jobs are available out there with that degree, also with 2ndary education.
Answers:
I have a French degree myself. There are actually several options -- your girlfriend made a good choice -- she can do anything that anyone with other "generalist" (usu. humanities) degrees can do, plus several things that only French speakers can do. For example: she can go to law school. She can get a corporate job in any number of things (consulting or marketing, for example). She can be a journalist. My brother has a history degree and is a pilot -- I'm sure one could do that with a French degree as well. I know someone with a Japanese degree who works in sales. Of course she could teach at any number of levels. She could work in the financial world, either for a bank or even as an investment banker! -- I know someone with an engineering degree who is doing just that, apparently it only requires scoring well on a qualifiying exam. To say nothing of the myriad government and educational/administrative jobs (university counseling, for example) she could do. Finally, no degree precludes you from working in your own business enterprise -- The founder of Samuel Adams brewery has a law degree! She could open a cafe or a store. She also has options other more general degree-holders (English or history, for example) don't have: I know a French major who now translates things (brochures, I think) for vignobles in France. Of course there's always translation or the state department. . . the possibilities are endless. In fact, people need to move away from this idea that a degree is a job thing: an education is exactly that -- an education: the University is not a technical school or career college. Kudos to your girlfriend for learning something real in college!
Something in the UN. Or a diplomatic type of service. Translators are used in all kinds of government jobs. The Peace Corps. Just a few.
I would say international relations, teacher.
Restaurants would be good...She could work the French Fries or make the French Toast..
I can offer a few suggestions. She might be a translator for an international company or work for an airlines. Have her check out places where people speak French if she is considering relocating: Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Louisiana or New Orleans.
