Greek mythology and six?

Question:
We are currently reading an abridged (very much so) version of The Oddysey. I have noticed a repeated pattern; the number six is used very frequently. For example: six empty benches after the battle with the Cicones, the six-headed Scylla, etc.

Do the Greeks affiliate something with the number six, is it an important number to them, like with Judaism and the number 18 (chai)? Or is it all just coincidence?

Answers:
Actually you are making a very good point. I have never thought about that.

I have never heard about it meaning anything. I think it could be a coincidence because other numers are also frequently used by the ancient greeks, like the three-headed dog of the underworld, or a three-headed giant killed by Hercules...

It certainly has no meaning for Greeks today.
if its abridged then the number is actually 7. superstition is what probably changed the book
You should be this up with your instructor. You may be able to do a paper for bonus points on your view or s/he may know the significance of the number, if there is one. I don't recall it being significant though.
