You can place the Adsense ads wherever you like even amongst your content.
It's just a matter of selecting the size, shape and colour of the ads you want, then copy the html code from Google and paste it in the appropriate portion of your webpage.
Probably the best place is at the top, below your header graphic but before your content begins.
Go into the html mode and paste the code wherever you like.

I don't know what you mean by, "edible", unless you mean, "space you're willing to donate to adsense". If that's it, then you might consider, placing an adsense bar at the bottom of the page, way down, past the footer, keeping in mind, though, that the farther away from immediate view, the less likely you are to garner clicks...Perhaps, too, you might consider a small, unobtrusive bar across the top? Google offers bars in various sizes, including purdy narrow ones that go wide and not far vertically...like a 760px by 10px?
If you are making the templates, the best thing to do is to insert the google code into it before using the template. Since google ads run on keywords, you wouldn't have to insert it in all the pages of your site.
On the other hand, if someone made the templates for you, and hopefully if you have dreamweaver, you can insert the google code into the editable region and make it a 'nested template'. Which is also known as a child template. You can then use this child template for the rest of your site.
Any edits made on the parent template (the original template) will be reflected on the child template and on all pages of your site. Any edits made on the child template will be reflected on all pages of your site.
