I've been with the program since it opened in June 2003 and in my first month alone we earned $500, which immediately jumped to $1200 the following month -- and growth continued on and on
And I don't get millions of pageviews everyday. I know of a lot more people who gets more traffic than I do.
However, my site works EXTREMELY well with Adsense -- eCPM is extraordinarily high, CTR is double digits, and cost per click is above par. Hence even if the site does not receive as much traffic as others, my site performs leaps and bounds above them with Adsense.
Here are the key:
1. Responsiveness of audience to ads = my audiences consider the ads as a resource and part and parcel of the information we provide
2. Placement and layout of ads = we've done a lot of A/B testing and experimentation of the best layout and ad formats to use on our site
3. Diversified topic = leading to diversified keywords so even if bidding slows down in one topic, we still have lots of topics to balance out the slowdown in the other
