Affiliate links are like an online version of holding ann summers parties or avon etc.
You aren't employed by the company, but you sell their products on their behalf, and get a commission for each sale.
So, you sign up with an affiliate network, there are many in the UK such as Affiliate Future, Affiliate Window and Webgains. You choose a merchant that sells products which have a similar them to your website. You add their links to your site, and if someone clicks the link and buys from their website, you get a percentage of the sale (usually from 2% to 20%, average commission is 10%).
It means that you provide a service to your visitors, helping to point them to products they may be interested in, and earn a bit of money from it.
There are many people acting as affiliates in the UK, and the number is growing. Its not easy money, you have to work at it, the same as you would with anything else. I know a number of people in the affiliate forums who have done well enough to quit their jobs and work at it full time.
When it's to do with a website, it is a link to another site which has something to do with the website that the link is on [does that make sense]?
This a link to another website, where the owner of the site that the link goes to pays a small fee to the owner of the site where the link is.
In general they are a waste of time.

Imagine promotional links with your answers - good deal, shocking but true - kind of Slogans and you or yahoo make money out of it, its not there now but you can find such in other cheaper quality sites...
So net-net the more time i spend here answering question the better for Yahoo & so to you.in the bargain ?

A link to a website where you could get paid if the visitor buys something. Clickbank are a major register of ebooks for sale and you can register as an affiliate seller by promoting the provided links that will have your username in them.
As for the comment above 'a waste of time'. Tell that to the guy who sold over 8000 ebooks at $97 each on the first day of sales! He offered his affiliates 50% of the sale price so he was very happy and so were his affiliates. The ebook is still for sale and is still selling very well.
It is a well recognised and effective promotional and sales technique.
