How have you done with Google Adwords?

I've had the good fortune of having some successful businesses in the past and over the last year I've started yet another one and heard much about this program. Is it worth it? I know it's a lot of time to really learn it and perfect it so I'd like to hear the pros and cons from you.

I would recommend purchasing the google adwords book from Perry MArshall (http://www.perrymarshall.com ). he has a lot of good tips in terms of google adwords.

Basically the premise is that your adwords need to attract the RIGHT audience. If you have a lot of rubbish viewers to your website, your monthly bill is going to turn into the thousands of dollars.
Pay-per-click search engine marketing (SEM) should be one of your first (and maybe only) marketing activities. Whether it's with Yahoo! or Google, SEM attracts the most highly qualified audiences possible since persons are querying your brand or product/service. Additionally, your risk is mitigated in that you are only paying upon persons clicking your ad. (So make sure you have something compelling to say once they get to your website!)
I have used Adwords in the past and it was extremely easy to use. I have a friend who is a 65 year old author who learned how to use it effectively.

I have used Adwords to build traffic to my sites, especially when there are hundreds of sites competing for top search engine rankings.

Adwords basic model is simple pay per click, you determine how much you are willing to pay for "Top Billing". If you want your site/ad to show up first on a search word, you willl have to pay a premium to get it there but you can set a max limit per month. So after your ad gets clicked on X amount of times and you reach your max $ amount limit, your ad stops showing up on Google.

The more niche your site is the less effective Adwords becomes, you are better off just building good meta tags in your website.

For me it really helped get the word out for my site early on.
The only drawback with Google Adwords is that you have to spend a lot of money to get noticed. Spending $10 or $20 a month won't get you many clicks, if any. Even a few hundred dollars a month might not get you noticed out there these days. Hopefully, your business is unique enough that there isn't too much competition.

Another drawback to Google Adwords is they have terrible customer support, so hopefully nothing ever goes wrong. They made a mistake with my credit card and it took months to get it corrected (no exaggeration). I was going out my mind. I'm surprised because Google seems like such a large company. You'd think they have their act together by now. They take several days just to respond to an email.
