You are basically an independent contractor with the company. You promote/sell their products and/or services and bring new people into the company to do the same. You are paid based on your sales.
If you are thinking of joining an affiliate program, be very careful about the companies you join. There are a lot of scams out there. There are also some good solid companies that can help you earn a substantial income.

basically if you own a website and you are put another company banner on your site where you get a percentage of any sales linked to that banner you are an affiliate
its just someone you are helping out like helpping them sale there product . some affiliates gets a link from that program to put on your own website to help them sale. i been on many affiliate programs, but just gave it up
