Well you're right - first you have to get traffic. How many people (who don't know you and aren't related to you) go to your blog every day?
Dirty little secret: hardly anybody makes money with blogs.
Submit your blog to search engines and other sites. Pick good keywords. If no one knows about your blog how will they visit. Once you start getting visitors, they will start clicking on the ads. I did the same with my website. For more information go to google and type in submit url or something similar.

For this you need to have an optimal and excellent ad placement, and of course web traffic. You can work on the ad placement and make sure it is good, but what about web traffic?
