According to some newspapers, Google also pays Yahoo! for variety of patents it has, including a patent on displaying search ad related to search results, which Yahoo! got through Overture acquisition.

I was an original yahoo user and in the begging yes yahoo search engines was google. but that was before google wasn't so popular
i have always known google and yahoo to be two separate companies. this might be extra info, but might be why u were asking: we used to have at&t, which had the google search tool on their customers' homepage, but then when sbc & at&t got together, we ended up switching to the NEW at&t, even though there is still an old at&t for the customers who haven't switched. i don't know if their webpages still have google on them, but i doubt it. the new at&t webpages have yahoo.
There used to be links between the two companies. I'm a longtime Yahoo user and remember seeing google logo on Yahoo pages.

yes they were affiliated at one time. Yahoo was actually an early investor in google but sold their share. Also, yahoo used to use googles search engine as their own
