When did the word 'artist' become affiliated with the music industry?
Question:
singer.someone who sings a song
musician.someone who plays an instrument....
When did the term 'artist' grow in meaning...curious..
Answers:
there are artists and music artists. people are just too lazy to say music artist
that is what alot of people associate the word artist with, however, an artist is anyone who makes something for other people or themselves to enjoy.
I think at one time, the acts usted to actually "create" music, not just remix old ****, hence Artist
The term "the arts" encompasses a lot--painting, music, acting, dance, etc.
The definition of artist is one who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value, especially in the fine arts.
It's bandied about to self-inflate egos.
There used to be commercials for Slim Whitman and such that refered to musicians as "recording artists".
These days everyone's an artist for just about anything. The term is misused even more than "love".
no
an artist, is who does something as an art. Music is an art, acting is an art, painting is an art etc. There's more labels than just an artist too though (like you mentioned "musician"). The term "artist" in the music business has been here for a LONG while. Just some inside input from someone in the music business..

Artist is a general term for someone who creates, though that term is used very loosely nowadays where music is involved. Entertainer is being confused with artist and it's kind of sickening to us who spent a lot of time honing our skills.
I am in the entertainment industry and music is art for the ears musicians are artists in there own way
The answer to that lies in the meaning of the word "art." Art is not simply the act of creating a concrete item. Written words and music are also considered "art" and have been for centuries.
I agree that we have a very liberal society in how we define and use the word "art" or even "artist." We could call a bricklayer who is so accomplished at what they do an "artist" and it wouldn't be wrong. Anything that creates music, sounds, words, images, colors, or objects and arrangements that are considered beauty or exceptional is considered an art, so applying that to ANY field would be acceptable.
I hope that helps.
