It is a way for companies to encourage you to advertise their services. Normally, you will join the affiliate scheme and provide your details. You then get a bit of code that you paste into you website that contains a link to their website via your affiliate number.
Everytime someone clicks on that link and purchases a product you get paid a certain amount.
Some affiliate programs are very good, a lot are a waste of time as you get so little money or no money - but you are still advertising their company. Clearly, the other argument is that at least you can get some money for doing very little.
Businesses that run affiliate programs pay a commission on sales of their products or services generated from your website. Commission amounts vary. As an affiliate, you host a link or banner promoting the company's website or product.
