Persistance is the keyword here! Dont use them dumass sites that set you up with pay per click accounts! Most everyone whe has a comercial outlet chain (kmart, walmart, etc) all have affiliate programs now! The hard part is shovin your website down the worlds throat! I have created a few sites for peep that have netted them a good income but I aint got the patience or desire to sit here and rub it in the worlds face! Its no different in anything you do! Ambition and motivation is a must! I unfortunately have neither! LOL
I do not think the affiliate program would work for most people. First the cost of joining affiliate program, the advertising fees from yahoo or google. Most people joined because of the big money promised with colourful paycheck or charts to show how much they are earning. In fact, these are true but only to a few.
To make a big money out of it, they are willing to invest a big sum of money in search engine. How much to bid for a keyword to be at the top 10? It is like 1 USor more per click to your website. So I guess most people has quit after they know they cannot afford it. Imagine 1 day you have to pay 50US to a search engine for advertise, how much for a month? I do agreed with you that the biggest winner will the merchant itself as they just sit there and wait for cash to come in without any high expenses for advertisement. It is because of you guys help them to pay. I would not say you are being used by them or what, it is just the fact that people are using one another to succeed. These are just my opinions.

With the right direction and action, I think that affiliate marketing is a great way for anybody to start a business online.
As far as being a chess piece, I don't really think that way. You have to think of it as part of a business process. You could think about this in an offline way...like how Wal-Mart is selling digital cameras for Casio. Casio is making money and Wal-Mart is making money. Would you consider Wal-Mart a chess piece?
They're using their offline shop to promote the products. They've done the marketing to have people go into their shop. They've laid things out in a way that makes people convert to customers.
As affiliates, we're kind of doing something similar for our websites. We don't own the product or company, we just work with them and make money together.
There are plenty of free ways to market your affiliate websites as long as you are willing to trade your time...and that's something that the average person won't do.
